Language-based Math Intervention
Many children with auditory processing disorders struggle with math due to the memory requirements. The therapists at uPs Therapy Services believe it is important to have a strong, deep understanding of the base ten numeric system, the patterns/numeric relationships within it, and the mathematical rules that govern it. Language-based math intervention includes systematically teaching and strengthening the ability to visualize, identify and attach meaning to a numeral to an equation. Just as children need this gestalt for reading, it is just as significant for math. Understanding word problems requires taking language concepts and converting them into a real number story. Language-based math instruction helps students develop images to make these number stories more concrete and real.
At Upstate Pediatric Speech Therapy Services, Inc., our therapists believe that your child can become independent thinkers for a life-long journey of learning in mathematics.
