Speech Screening

A speech screening identifies those children that are more likely to have speech and/or language disorders that may interfere with education, development, or communication. Screening results may generate recommendations for passing with no further testing required. A rescreening may be required in the upcoming months. If a comprehensive speech-language evaluation is recommended, generally the score did not meet the cut-off or criterion for a given childs age.
Standardized and nonstandardized methods are used to screen for articulation, language, voice, and fluency. Patients who fail a screening are referred for more extensive testing.
In addition to speech, a speech-language pathologist can screen a childs hearing. This pure-tone audiometric test identifies those persons that could potentially have auditory disorders that may interfere with their health, education, development, or communication.
